When the Liberal-Conservative coalition led by Lars Løkke Rasmussen came to power in Denmark in 2001, it relied on support from the right-wing and staunchly anti-immigrant Danish People's Party [Danske Folkeparty – DF]. As a result of that union, Denmark passed some of the strictest immigration and asylum laws in Europe. Among other things, its policies restricted benefits to immigrants, limited their ability to work and required Danes marrying a foreigner to post an $11,600 bond. The number of asylum seekers and relatives of immigrants applying for entry into the country dropped by nearly 70% over nine years, and the DPP moved closer to its goal: a complete end to immigration from non-Western countries. The government's common policy outlines a number of concrete changes. They include automatic citizenship for children born and raised in Denmark, regardless of their parents' citizenship; equal welfare rights for immigrants and Danes; vast reductions in application fees and cash securities; expanded work benefits for asylum seekers; and the possibility of dual citizenship, which will ease the naturalization process. The coalition also plans to ease family reunification rules, which have seen 800 children denied residency permits since 2005, frequently leading to the separation of children and their parents.

Strict Immigration Laws 'Save Denmark Billions'
Denmark's strict immigration laws have saved the country 6.7 billion euros, a government report has claimed. Even though Denmark already has some of the toughest immigration laws in Europe, right-wing populist politicians are now trying to make them even more restrictive.
Denmark's strict immigration laws have saved the country billions in benefits, a government report has claimed. The Integration Ministry report has now led to calls among right-wing populists to clamp down further on immigrants to increase the savings.
But the report has sparked outrage from opposition parties like the centrist Social Liberal Party, which dismissed it as undignified and discriminatory. The party's integration spokeswoman, Marianne Jelved, said: "A certain group of people is being denounced and being blamed for our deficit, being made into whipping boys." She added: "We cannot classify people depending on their value to the economy. That is degrading in a democracy that has a basic value of equality."
Still, the announcement has not come as surprise. The right-wing populist DPP, which has been working with the ruling center-right coalition government of Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen since 2001, has in the past made its aims very clear: a complete halt to immigration into Denmark from non-Western countries. "A Somali who is no good for anything, that is simply not acceptable," said DPP leader Pia Kjærsgaard. Similarly, center-right liberal Prime Minister Rasmussen has also said anyone who would be a burden on Denmark is not welcome in the country.
Right-wing populists have even demanded a ban on satellite dishes so that TV stations like al-Jazeera and Al Arabiya cannot be beamed into Danish living rooms. There have also been suggestions to exempt migrants from the minimum wage -- supposedly to make it easier for foreigners to gain access to the labor market.
But things may soon get pushed even further. Elections are due to be held this fall, and the ruling parties apparently want to put forward even stricter rules, driven by the xenophobic rhetoric of the right-wing populists.
Some immigrants have already turned their back on Denmark voluntarily. Increasing numbers of Somalis are moving away, especially to the UK, the Jyllands Posten reported on Thursday, because of discrimination.

Tax Evasion
The leader of Denmark's main opposition party says she made a "big and sloppy error" by giving incorrect information to the Danish authorities about her husband, Stephen Kinnock.Social Democrat leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt was speaking after the Danish tabloid newspaper BT had accused her husband of evading Danish taxes.
Mr Kinnock is the son of Lord Kinnock, the former UK Labour Party leader.
He works and pays tax in Switzerland on a reported income of £110,000.
Mrs Thorning-Schmidt admitted making a mistake over the amount of time her husband had spent in Denmark.
They have their family home in the Danish capital Copenhagen, even though Mr Kinnock works in Switzerland.
Mrs Thorning-Schmidt, who has campaigned for higher taxes for high earners, insists that her husband has resided in Denmark for only 33 weekends per year.
Therefore, she argues, he does not have to pay taxes in Denmark.
But when the couple applied for permission for Mr Kinnock to buy half of their shared home, Mrs Thorning-Schmidt wrote to the authorities that her husband spent "every weekend of the year from Friday through to Monday" in Denmark.
As a non-resident and UK citizen Mr Kinnock would not normally be allowed to buy a property in Denmark.

Gods & Politics
The conference “Gods & Politics” was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, june 18-20, 2010, at the Royal Danish Library also known as “The Black Diamond”. This prime venue was the perfect frame around this fascinating and stimulating event.
As the name implies, one focus of the conference will be on religion and politics – what challenges do we as non-believers face today, and do we have a strong enough voice in the debate? But the conference is much broader than that, and we have a fantastic line-up of speakers from all around the world and covering many different fields. You can look forward to presentations by some of the most influential psychologists, skeptics, philosophers and scientist in the world – including Richard Dawkins (personal page), James Randi (US), and PZ Myers (US).

Refugees in Denmark
Some political refugees are still living in bad situations in Denmark, regardless to the Refugees International Conventions and Protocols Denmark had signed. These bad situations escalated since the second victory of the liberal party of Denmark "Venstre parti" to pursue a second term of governing, following "Bush American's example". [...]
That member of Parliament said, "All refugees should work in the cleaning sector regardless to their careers," Said one of the refugees and added, "I would like to work on this sector if there's really a job there not a long practices period, but I've doubt that other professionals and intellectuals would".
This attitude reflects no respect to professionalism and intellectuality. It is against the integration law too, because it imposes the following question: How they decided to integrate those political refugees with this negative intention. Forget about who should integrate into whom! [...]
Those people I met here are two aware that they do not have and they do not mean any discrimination in their jobs prescriptions. They are desperately feeling they are ZEROS not humans. [...]
Students in Denmark demonstrated against such bad educational situations and sent critical messages to the Education Minister for his continuous changes in the educational system. Some of them told him that they couldn't say bad words, but they wanted to know why he is irritating them by those frequent changes.

Some political refugees live in humiliation under hard conditions enforced by those new regulations, which goes the opposite direction to the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol relating to the status of refugees. [...]
No one wants to speak about why there are no good programs for well and high-educated political refugees to continue their careers.

Deportations in Denmark
There are many cases of foreigners in Denmark who, after they made a child with a local, are send (without the child) in their countries where they came from. Such a case is presented by Politiken: after 18 years of marriage, a kenyan woman who is married to a dane (and together, they have a daughter), is forcibly being deported because of the current immigration laws. She has done nothing wrong, she has committed no crime.
She is being deported despite the fact her husband is a danish citizen, has paid taxes all of his life, has worked for years on behalf of the danish foreign service for providing aid work in developing nations, is gainfully employed as an engineer, and together, they are homeowners. The immigration laws include a provision that stipulates that any dane who has received unemployment compensation for a cumulative period of over one year shall be ineligible to bring a foreign born spouse into the country under the "family reunion" act. and it is not just limited to unemployment compensation, the law penalizes danes who have ever benefited from ANY state-provided assistance (thus being deemed a so-called burden on society) by in-effect denying these danes the right to ever marry someone who is from outside the EU or scandinavia and then expect to live together in Denmark.
Had this woman been from Sweden or Poland, under the current laws, they would have no problem, but she is from Kenya, and therefore she is being forced out. The law treats her terribly and also treats danes differently. The law tells danes who they should marry and who they should not marry by giving danes who marry the "right" person many significant advantages. It is unfair and it is wrong.
And of course, the law is inhumane, unreasonable and discriminatory towards the non-danish spouse. Think about that.
This law does not apply to the two LARGEST recipients of state supported welfare: Crown Prince Frederik and his younger brother Joachim, who both have both married non-EU foreigners and in each case, a special law has been put into effect that circumvents the immigration laws for the sake of their spouses, the new princesses. Nobody raises an eyebrow.

Danish Pastries
Denmark, long the liberal, open society that welcomed immigrants, has done an about face. After being the symbolic envy of Universalists, of Socialists, of cultural liberalism, Denmark today has the strictest immigration policy in Europe.
The Muslim population in Denmark, constituting a mere 4% of the total, refuses to integrate, consumes 40% of the welfare, and constitutes a majority of the country’s convicted rapists. The Danes now acknowledge that their core values of personal liberty, free speech, equality for women and tolerance of other ethnic groups are incompatible with Islam as they know it.
Muslim leaders openly advocate introducing Islamic law in Denmark. Danes at the forefront of advocating free speech and Western values are subject to fatwas and increasingly violent attacks from the Muslim population.
This haven of tolerance and openness has opted for survival and rationality. For citizenship, the country now requires of new immigrants:
America is no stranger to accusations of profiling, political incorrectness and racism. Yet Muslims worldwide still beat down our doors to gain immigration status to the U.S. - they tellingly do not do likewise to the majority of UN nations habitually accusing the U.S. of racism. When did Cuba or Russia, Syria or even Saudi Arabia, those bastions of tolerance and freedom, last receive a deluge of immigrant applications?
So we in the U.S. spend our time being sued by aggressive Imams testing nervous airlines. Open season has been declared on the West by demanding Islamist organizations hoping to force the government and our municipalities to kowtow into passive submission. We now clearly need footbaths in every university restroom. We also need two taxi lines at every airport - one for those with short skirts, dogs or alcoholic beverages and one for Shari’a-compliant Americans.
Yet little spunky Denmark is showing us and everyone the way. They opened their borders and their coffers to welcome Muslims, in a show of remarkable generosity and goodwill. Now, bruised and battered by an unappreciative, increasingly fundamentalist, and sadly uncompromising Muslim community, they are closing their doors and battening down the hatches.
It is only a matter of time before America’s similar generosities and freedoms are likewise pressured. It will not be too long before our remarkable naiveté, our exquisitely refined political correctness, are replaced by realistic pragmatism and a strong commitment to our own cultural survival, to uncompromising freedoms and our non-negotiable security and liberty.
A new found taste for Danish pastries perhaps?
